An Early Crime Recalled.A correspondent of the IndianapolisNews says: “In a deserted cemetery near Rome City stands a dilapidated headstone bearing the inscription, ‘My husband rests in heaven. MoClregor McDougal, died January 28, 1858, aged twenty-seven years. ’ In those days this section of the state was infested by counterfeiters and horse thieves, who terrorized the community and even elected judges of the court and other officers. Finally the regulators were organized. McDougal was arrested, tried and acquitted, after which a mass-meeting was called and it was determined to lynch him. Thousands of people attended the execution. While standing on the impromptu scaffold McDougal confessed that he had been a thief, but claimed he had never shed blood; further that he was innocent of the crime of which he was accused, but he recognized that a victim was needed and was willing to suffer. The execution had a salutary effect; many of his associates were sent to prison and the gangs were broken up.**
