Smith has been around Colorado City for a long time and it is said that history pertaining to him is somewhat on the checkered order.According to those who know him. Smith, as he prefers to be known just now. comes of a splendid family inNew York state and when he arrived in Colorado City he had plenty of money. Some say he was possessed of several thousand dollars but at all eventshe was flush. It is said that he blithely trod the primrose path of dalliancefor some time and finally met LauraBell, a woman who AlSd quite well known in Colorado City and in certain circles in Colorado Springs. Whether it was a case of love at first sight cannot be said but mutual friends of the lady and Smith concede that a warm friendship existed, which suddenly terminated when Miss Bell had Smith arrested on a charge of threatening to take her life.Smith soon furnished bond and was released. He was away for a time but showed his good faith by returning in case he might be wanted. It is claimed that his behavior subsequent to his return was not such as would justify entire confidence in his integrity and his bondsmen withdrew from his bond. Smith was therefore re-arrested. is now in the county jail and. as the jailor says, “for some reason he wants to get out.’4
