Black Bart Laughs to Scorn theThreat of Lynching.Prospect of Jurors Being Secured Soon in the Cronin'j.Case—Etc.Black Bart m Besaemer Jail.Bessemer, Mich., Sept. 3.—Holzhey, thebandit, in resting in a jail that looks like adry goods box. When the train arrived atNorth Bessemer Monday morning there wasnot a single soul out to greet the terror ofthese northern woods. North Bessemer istwo miles north of this station. A stage, asthey call every wagon in this part of thecounty, was rn hand, Holzhey was bundledinto it, and he was rattled over the roughand stony road to the packing case tney calla prison here. On the way through thewoods the manacled bandit said: ‘‘If I hadonly known about this stage I would have•topped it several months ago. Aud, SheriffFoley, I waut to tell you that I am onlysorry I did not meet you in the woods. They would have needed a new sheriff ii I had seen you first.”Considerable Talk of Lynching. There has been no excitement here at all, and the bandit himseif feels that be is sate. He is in jail with a couple of other murderers, and during the time he has been gazing defiantly at numerous crowds that have called on h m. In the saloons, and there are many of them here, there was considerable talk of lynching during the day, but the nerve required by a leader has not yet developed. The wooden jail of which the county boasts is surrounded by people who have Winchester rifles and lots of confidence in themselves. Sheriff Foley tail Monday night: “The prisoner will go toJackson for life, and I’m going to see that he gets a fair start. I will stay very near him, and if any lynching party oiAes around 1 will turn him loose with a octuple of guns. I will also have a couple myself, and if anylody attempts to take the prisoner away for lynching purposes Holzhey will not be the only man to die. ”The Coroner’s Inquest.Bessemer county is building a new stone jail, and Holzhey will be taken to it. Foley would not allow any one to see the prisoner Monday. The fellow was kept close, and | even bis preliminary examination was conducted behind the bars. The coroner also held bis inquest Monday, and by the q|d °f half a dozen jurors found that Mr, Fleiscb-bein came to his death from bullet wounls inflicted by Holzhey. Only two witnesses were examined, one of them the stage driver, Theodore Dermith, and the other Dr. Loop^, of this place. In the room where the inquest was held was W. G. Decelle, the first man ever held up by Holzhey. Decelle is a St Paul attorney, and he insists that the bandit arrested here is tbe coolet individual that ever said ‘‘Hands up!”A Conflict of Authority.Decelle ap{ean to be a timid sort of individual and acknowledges that he will throw up his hands at any stage rohlier’s command. Bessemer county wants to try the robber here, but there will not be a session of tbe grand jury until Oct. 25. There promises to be a conflict of authority over the custodyof tbe prisoner. Postoftiee Inspector Pult;-eifer came here from Chicago and he has been trying to convince Sheriff Foley that Holzhey ought to bo given up to the United Suites for the mail robberies he committed in Shawano county. Mr. Puicifer will not get the prisoner. Holzhey talks freely about everything except bis crimes, and be laughs over tbe iright into which he threw Attorney Decelle, of St, Paul, when that gentleman fell a victim to his levclei revolvers. Will Take Care of Hiiuself. There is uo prospect of a lynching now. A correspondent tried to reach the jail Monday night, but was challenged on all approaches by men with Winchester rifles. Sheriff Foley even caine out himself ami said: “What are you looking fori If you’re expecting a lynching you had better go home for I want to say there will be no hanging iu this county. It anything of the kind is attempted there will tie trouble.” Holzhey himself is not worried. He assures himself with the promise of the sheriff, who has said he will give him guns if he is attacked by a lynching party, and be says he will care for himself iu any such emergency.Mr. Mackichor Reported Dying.Holzhey Is a harmless fellow, and the prevalent impression is that he is cruzy—a condition brought around by tue excessive perusal of dime novel literature. Some people came over here Monday night from Minne-h|K1m and reported that Donald Mackichor, the banker who wass hot by Holzhey, was dying. Sheriff Foley at once hurried up to the jail to protect his prisoner, and says there will be no lynch law practiced there. Should Mackichor die and word reach hare iu time no one cot tell what may happen Foley is resolute, but the knots of men w ho are discussing the capture of Holzusy on the street corners huve a desperate ring in their voices.
