Mildred AfratesMildred Afrates (nee Zimmerman), 88, of Lorain, died Saturday at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following a brief illness.Born in Dunkirk, NY., she resided in Lorain most of her life.She worked for Lorain City schools as a custodian and during World War II, she worked at the American Stove Works inLora irkMrs. Afrates was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Lorain, the Hartford Circle and Sunago, both of the church, and the Church Women United of Lorain.She was active in the PTA and volunteered with the Red Cross and with the Wade Park VA Hospital, Cleveland, where she worked in the library. She was a member of the Salvation Army Keenagers and Kitchen Kuties and was an original member of the Salvation Army Kitchen Kuties Band.She enjoyed ceramics, Ohio State Buckeyes football and Lake Erie.Survivors include her sons Dennis “Happy” Norman, Leonard “Jiggers,” and Allen, all of Lorain; daughters Angela Wise of Monroeville, Pa., Elaine Feldkamp, Sandra Kastl and Cynthia Gladney, all of Lorain, and Janice Hoover of Kenner, La.; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great, greatgrandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1958; her son Kenneth, a Lorain City firefighter; two grandchildren; parents, Fred rich and Ida (nee Turbo 11) Zimmerman; a brother, Fred Zimmerman; and sisters Norma Zimmerman, Freda Hutchings and Evelyn Zimmerman.Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at 10:30 a.m at Faith United Methodist Church, 2201 Reid Ave., Lorain.The Rev LaRoy Ruble will officiate.Burial will be in-Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
