• 1AllawayJury Retires After First Full DaySANTA ANA — A Superior Court jury here in the sanity hearing for convicted mass murderer Edward Charles Allaway failed to reach a decision Thursday, its first full day of deliberations.Judge Robert Kneeland ordered the six-man, six-woman panel to return to his court at 9 a.m. today to resume consideration of the case. Thus far the jury has been out for V/2 days.Allaway. 38, was convicted on Aug, 16 of seven murders and two assaults in connection with the July 12, 1976 bloodbath at Cal State Fullerton, The same jury which found him guilty of those counts is now considering his sanity during the shooting spree.The jury Thursday asked for and received the re-reading of testimony from three psychiatrists and Allaway's wife, Bonnie, Court reporter Louis Guevara re-read the testimony of defense psychiatrists Dr. Seiwyn Rose and Dr. David Sheffner. and prosecution psychiatrist Seawright Anderson.Public defender Ronald Butler, Al-laway's attorney, said his client was kept in a holding tank in the basement of the courthouse all day Thursday while the jury deliberated, Butler said he visited Allaway early in the afternoon, and reported that Alla way was “exhausted.”
