Sheriff John Todd, accompanied by hia deputy and a posse of men, was successful in bringing to jail one Edward Clawson, a fugitive from justice, who is alleged to have escaped from Sheriff J. J. Horen-deen at Big Rapids, Mich,. August 20, while ho was taking him to jail. Clawson is wanted in the Wolverine state for robbing a gingseng garden and made his escape by jumping from a fast Grand Rapids train on the date above mentioned, According to information from Herendeeo tho fugitive was handcuffed when be leaped from the train.Sheriff Todd and his deptuty, Charles Minnicb, hurriedly secured an auto* mob'ilo and wont to the place only to find that Clawson had been “put next” and left The posse, receiving a tip that the man had secretod himself in the home of Benjamin Sheeloy, near Topeka, went to his place but, according to Sheriff Todd, was told that bo was not tbore. The ahoriff and bis men waited near the bouse until daybreak and capturod him as he attempt ed to leave the place.Ho was brought back to Lagrange and placed in jail with bis brother Tim who iB waiting trial iu the circuit court on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. Fearing that he would be taken back to Michigan to answer to the charge, ho secured a sharp piece of glass in his cell and slashod an ugly gash in his arm in an attempt to kill bimsolf. A physician saved his life, Clawson is a bad character and bos been in trouble before. Sheriff Todd will hold him pending information from Michigan, Meantime a cioso watch will be kept that ho does not attempt to repeat the rash act.
