As she passed me she gave me a poke with the pail in the ribs, and whispered with a sneer: ‘Aien t you a coward ! ’ As she uttered these words, the devil, against whom I had fought all night, entered into my heart, and transformed me into a demon. All feelings ol remorse and mercy forsook me trmn that instant, and darker and deeper plans of mnruer and theft flashed through my mind. ‘Go and feed the cows,’ said I with a bitter laugh, ‘you j-hall soon see if I am the coward you take me for.’ She went out to milk, and I went in to murder the unsuspicious housekeeper I found her at the sink in the kitchen, washing her face in a basin.DOM I IsToroiMommAli ej on the g displaye moved, will notTuesForm o’clock i ernor 0 3 p. iiMonum to His 1 Speed in Enter! a All the hibitinii partmei Garden; ic Wontepecialtdiers.- - — — — — —— — — — - — ——• - — —• - — _. i ^I had the fatal axe in my hand, and with- t 6.30 p.out pausing or an instant to change my mind. 1 struck her a heavy blow on the top of the head with the axe. She fell to the floor at my feet without uttering a word; and opening the trapdoor that led from the kitchen into the cellar, I hurled her dow n, closed the door, and wiped away the perspiration that was streaming down my face.*• A few urnutes later Grace Marks came in with her pails, looking as innocent and demure as the milk they conWbdn:Great under tteui Atstacle a etc., coi ting in in front and Inc Band oMasseyvv.f V uu VHV ii# i i i\ VIIVJ voir /tamed. She obeyed, and they went into the cellar, which presented a dreadful spec*• tacle. Nancy Montgomery was not dead: she nad only been stunned by the blow. She had partly recovered her senses, and was kneeling on one knee as the hideous pair descended the ladder with a ligli**i don’t know if she saw us,’ said McDermott, ‘for she must have been blinded with the blood that was flowing from her tace; but she certainly heard us, and raised her clasped hands, as if to implore uiercy. 1 turned to Grace. Km near returned next day, not oil horseback, as he had departed, but driving a light one horse wagon. He was informed that the housekeeper^ had gone to Toronto by the stage, to which iie replied: ‘That is strange, as I passedthe stage and did not see her in it.’ Af*,er tea Kinnear was inveigled by McDermott into the harness-house or back kitchen, and there shot through the heart. He staggered forward and fell, exclaiming as fie did so: ‘O God, I am shot.’The body wao then thrown into the cellar. McDermott and Grace Marks then commenced packing up all the valuables they could find. They both went iuto the cellar, and McDermott took the keys and some money from the murdered man’s pockets. About 11 o’clock p. in. the murderers harnessed the horse; put the boxes in the wagon and started for Toronto, where they breakfasted about 5 o’clock. They then went by boat to Lewiston, where they were to be married, but were arrested the next morning a-bout 6 o’clock by the bailiff and brought back to Toronto. At the trial which followed both were found guilty of muider and were sentenced to be hanged, the female with a recommendation to mercy .
