A chatty Robert Tezak could have some folks in Will Countyquaking. ^1The former Will County coroner pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges that he hired people to burn down a bowling alley he owned so that he copuld collect the resultant insurance. The building, Galaxy Bowl in Crest Hill, was damaged but not destroyed in the 1987 torch job.Tezak also admitted that he had threatened to kill his former daughter-in-law and ex-lover if she testified against him in court after he learned she was cooperating with authorities. As part of the guilty plea agreement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will drop charges that he conspired to burn down a Joliet office building he owned, although Tezak has admitted his guilt in that matter as well. That building housed the federally-funded Will County Private Industry Council and the Will County Center for Community Concern.Government investigators are looking at allegations against other people in regard to political corruption, drug-trafficking, arson and a homicide. It may be that Tezak knows something about that. Multimillionaire Tezak, who made a fortune peddling the popular UNO card game, was a powerful force in Will County Republican politics. His guys generally won spots on the ticket.Government officials won’t say whether Tezak is cooperating with them as another facet of the guilty plea arrangement. The severity of his sentence on March 4 — or the severity of the sentence sought by the prosecutors — may give a hint. The maximum Tezak would receive is 20 years in prison and $750,000 in fines. Maybe he’s mum and maybe he isn’t.And maybe some people of note in Will County are worried. Happy Halloween, folks.
