Rare murder shocks communityGOESSEL, Kan. (AF) — When Shelly Prine, 22, of Goessel died Monday she became the first murder victim in Marion County in more than seven years, and citizens in the Mennonite community say they are frightened and confused by the murder.Mrs. Prine was the daughter-in-law of Norma Schultz of Great Falls.Mrs. Prine's husband, Robert, found his wife dying in a pool ofblood on their living room floor whenhe returned from duck hunting Sunday, his father said. She died Monday in a Wichita hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday in Concordia, Kan.“They were a perfect couple together,” said his father, also named Robert Prine. “They came here looking for a little quiet smalltown life. That sure isn’t what they found.”Two months ago, the young couple moved from Newton, renting a white frame farmhouse a couple of miles southeast of Goessel, a quiet Mennonite farm community of 421 people.Marion County authorities said they had no suspect nor motive, but that Shelly Prine’s death was definitely a homicide. That’s what frightens Goessel residents.“We were all shook up very much,” said John Frey, a farmerwho lives across the sandy road from the Prine house. “This is a peaceful Christian community, and we just don't expect something like this.”Anita Goertzen, a cashier in Goessel, said customers are wondering whether the killer lives among them or is a drifter who committed a random crime.“This is a Mennonite community, she said. “We don't believe inviolence. That’s why it hit hard.”Murder is a stranger to Marion County. The last homicide was the July 1979 kidnapping and killing of Peabody banker Grant Avery.
