OCTOBER 81, 1878Near Vincennes, Wednesday night of last week, John Vacelet, a Frenchman, his wife, and two sons, were cut to pieces with ax in the hands of BOine unknowk person. Pierre Provost, a Frenchman who had been working on the fatrm for a few months, was arrested on suspicion, but the evidence was cireuursiantial. lie was a man of fifty years, lie came to a neighbor’s house the night of the murder, with nothing «5n hut his shirt, and informed them in broken English that they had va h—1 -of a time over at Vacelet’s.” The neighbor, Mr. Hruettc, furnished him with clothing, and, after break, fast, in company with his son and another neighbor, went with Provost to the scene of horror, but notified the authorities before entering the house. A coal-oi! lamp was burning on the table, and three axes were found in the house, but, apparently, only one of them had been used in the slaughter, the others being smeared with blood for a purpose. Vacelet was an honest man, and had accumulated some prop, erty. Saturday night Provost hanged himself with a towel and a portion of his coat made into a rope. When the jailor entered with his breakfast Sunday morning, the bloody fiend was stiff and cold. lie bad to draw his feet up from the floor and hold them until respiration ceased. A quiet smile of sweet peace played upon his features as if he gloried in his deed and in cheating j ustice. Late Saturday night a priest exhorted him to confess and take communion, as there was danger of lynching, and the holy man wanted him to go into the presence of his Maker with his soul stainless, but Pierre would not listen to him. A vigilance committee had been organized, it is said, and he would nndoubt-ly have been lynched. The most reasonable theory is that Provost had been hired by Vacelet’s relatives in Franco to put the family out of the way to prevent them from sharing in the large property recently left in that country by a deceased brother. The place was well chosen for the bloody deed. Knox county is reliably Democratic, and Blue Jeans is Governor.mt- • w —-The Army of the Tennessee is having a reunion at Indianapolis.
