Officials(Continued From Page 1A) cells featuring bunk beds, commode and sink and a large, steel-barred window.In addition to the chapel, dining hall, classrooms and workshops, the prison also features a gymnasium with full-sized basketball court, weights and exerciseequipment.There are two full basketball courts outside, plus two softball fields, two soccer fields, a jogging track and four handball courts.Prison officials said the exercise facilities help the inmates stay in shape, and in many cases introduce the men to exercise as a component of healthy living.In the long run, they said, such facilities will save taxpayers money by reducing health-care costs.Although the vacant prison is a nice place to visit, Saturday’s visitors unanimously agreed that the facility is no “country club,” if only for the reality that will hang over its residents like a permanent cloud.The average medium-security federal prisoner is in his late 30s and will be serving a 12-year sentence.With the abolition of federal parole, inmates expect to serve an average of 85 percent of their sentence.“You’ve got to keep in mind that they’re not going to be here a day, or a week or a month, but years and years,” Mr. Sarbanes said, noting the distant mountains that will be forever out of reach.“You’re never going to get outside the perimeter.”Mr. Taylor, credited with developing the community support that helped land the prison, noted the size of the prison. “I’m impressed with the magnitude of this place,” he said.“It’s quite large and it’s sort of foreboding when you realize you walk in here and you’re here for 12 years.”
