The maximum subsidence is now- eight feet seveninches, although the depressionhas heen partly filled. The concrete pavement is now buried to amaximum depth of three feet un-lor the fill. JThe subsidence became appar-i Wt in 1937 and year by year has become more rapid. So far thisrear the depression has increased iy more than four feet, as great as the total for the previous rears. In the interests of traafety it was held advisable toestablish detour around thevrea.Mining engineers have reported to the state highway department that the subsidence may continue gradually, but there is the possibility of a cave-in. Although thin may never occur the highway department decided to take stepsbefore the danger become! imminent.The surface sinking occurs as ;he earth settles into voids-—sec-s of the mine from which thelong w w i, US-2 through Vulcan a the potential danger zone. The detour is now being signed and improved to he in readiness for the traffic rerouting.
