HIS TRIAL YESTERDAY.Geo. Oakman’s liomlHinen Turn Him Over and He Is in Jail at Carthage. At Carthage yesterday was held the trial of Geo. Oakman, well-known in this city, on the charge of forgery and obtaining money under false pretenses. The case is of particular interest in this section, owing to the fact that for a time Oakman and his men worked in thi9 vicinity selling fruit trees, plants, etc., but if there was any charge of irregularity while they worked here it has not been learned.Oakman, his brother Bert and one Richard Hupp, were agents for the Alpha Nursery company of Alpha, 111., and had numerous assistants, among these being several men from this city, but these latter are in no way connected with the alleged fraudulent transactions. They did an enormous business and orders poured in at a great rate. •When the time came for delivery of the goods, however, those buying them in many instances disputed the order. The orders had been raised from the amount they thought they had purchased. As a result they refused to accept the goods and there was considerable trouble. W. M. Wort, the owner of the nursery, became involved, as he had purchased much of the goods from other nurseries to fill the orders he supposed were good, and as a result of his trouble committed suicide. At the coroner's inquest the jury recommended that the grand jury investigate the matter. The Hancock county grand jury did this and as a result indictments were returned against Geo. Oakman. Chas. Ingram, a banker of LaHerpe, went on his bond of $500. Lately, on several different occasions, Ingram has threatened to turn Oakman over to the officers, as he was acting in a manner that did not satisfy him, but he would relent on the importunities of friends and Oakman's promise to do better. At last, however, he turned him over to the officers and he was taken to jail at Carthage to await trial, which was to be yesterday. Bert Oakman is now said to be in Arkansas. Of late Oakman has been drinking heavily and has not appeared like himself.Increased His Honda. The trial of George Oakman at Carthage has been postponed until next Monday. The court increased his bonds from $500 to $1,000 and in default of same was taken back to jail.
