tIL, TUESDAY EVJSJlt;THEN KILLED HIS WIFELMrs. Levi Schultz Is Shot by Her Husband at Their Home in Vandalia Suburb.Levi Schultz shot and killed his wife with a shot gun last night at their home in Vandalia village, on the hillside above Stop 2 on the Interurban line Just beyond the south approach to the lower bridge over Kanawha river between Charleston and South Charleston. Neighbors attracted to the scene*by an outcry and the sound of the shot found Schultz wildly excited and claiming that he had fired at a supposed intruder in his home and did not know that it was his wife he had shot until he found her body lying in the rear yard vrhere she had fallen from the back porch. He said it he had carried the body into the house j and placed it on a bed before neigh-’ hors arrived. They notified the Charleston police department of the affair.— I but before headquarters could get a ^ j policeman from one of the beats, Con- j j stable Gordon Carney was located, and j he drove in his automobile to the.! Schultz home accompanied by Police-! man Marion Childress, whom he picked up on the way.j The officers found Schultz evidently under the influence of liquor, and he admitted that he had been drinking' Old Hen of his own manufacture In | company with some young men of thej neighborhood visiting his house. For some reason he had poured out what; j was left of this liquor and had re-: loaded his shotgun previous to the arrival of the olllcors.Justice Tom K. Martin of Loudon' district was called from his home in j South Charleston, who summoned a, j coroner's Jury and conducted an in-! j quest in the Schultz home, lasting till J ‘about two o'clock this morning. The' shooting had occurred about 10 o’clock following the breaking up of the drinking party in the Schultz home. ; The jury returned a verdict stating that the woman came to her death from a gunshot wound in the back from the weapon fired by her husband. Mrs. Schultz was in her night clothes j ! when shot. The husbnad stated thatk ; he heard a noise on the back porch (and fired without knowing just w’ho j he was shooting at. Some of the : neighbors testified in the inquest that I they heard screams before the shooting.Following the inquest the woman’s!| body was taken in charge by a Char-j j leston undertaker and brought to a!| local establishment to be prepared for ; burial. The husband was held to the ’grand jury by Justice Martin and was I brought to the county jail He stated * there that he would probably be able ~ ! to give bond with the assistance of relatives liveing at Dry Branch, on Cub-I in creek. He has been employed at the Becker steel plant in South Char-' leston.
