He is reportedly at the maximum security prison in Almoloya de Juarez, near the Mexican capital.Humberto was brought to Matamoros the night of Oct. 13. Judge Francisco Salvador Perez of the Sixth Federal District placed him under house arrest for 30 days. But fearing that the younger Garcia Abrego could escape, Perez confined him to the headquarters of the Federal Judicial Police. But Perez lifted his order a week ago today after officials with the federal district attorney’s office informed thejudge they were getting ready to file formal charges against the younger Garcia Abrego. He was taken away in the wee hours of Friday.Perez’s assistant, Robert Suarez, said Garcia Abrego’s case is no longer under the jurisdiction of his office.“Judge Perez placed him under house arrest while an investigation was under way,” Suarez said, “but it was necessary for him to lift the order so Humberto Garcia Abrego could betransferred to Mexico City.”But how and when he was taken out of FJP custody still seems to be a mystery even for those working inside the building, which also houses the offices of the federal public ministry.“I have no idea when it took place,” said Ramiro Olvera Aguilar, one of three attorneys in charge of running the agency. “We were not in charge of handling that case.”Several employees interviewed inside the public ministry also declined to comment about the younger Garcia Abrego.“I was not working on that day,” said a clerk who declined to give his name, “but maybe those working the second shift saw something.”An FJP agent said he thought Garcia Abrego was still inside the building.Garcia Abrego’s older brother is the reputed drug lord of the so-called Gulf Cartel, whichonce based its drug smuggling operations here and was reportedly the local link of Colombia’s Cali Cartel.Juan Garcia Abrego has been wanted in the United States since November 1990 after a federal grand jury indicted him on numerous counts for drug smuggling.Posters of him are at the FJP and public ministry here.“Wanted: Juan Garcia Abrego,” reads a message below a large picture of the reputed drug lord. “Reward: $1,000,000.”
