THROAT CUT.The evil that follows in alcohol’s train was made horribly apparent last Sunday afternoon when Jack Dawson, the blacksmith at the crusher and Bent Jones, formerly proprietor of the Peoples’ saloon, had a bloody and probably a fatal fight. Some days previous they had disputed over an old bar bill and Dawson as he met Jones on the street would not speak in response to his salutation whereupon Jones said, “D—n you I’ll make you speak” at the same time reaching for his gun. He was intoxicated and slower than ordinary and to this fact Dawson probablyowes his life for Jones is fearless and a good shot but before he could get action, Dawson whipped out a common pocket knife, opened the little blade and made a thrust at Jones’ throat. The knife blade sank deep, narrowly missing the carotid artery but severing the large muscle on the left side of the neck and cutting across some of the veins.Dawson was taken into custody and surgeons attended Jones whose condition is precarious owing to the difficulty in staunching the now of blood while uniting the severed blood vessel.Dawson is in Bedford jail to await trial and Jones and the surgeons are making a heroic effort to prolong life. Jack Dawson is a blacksmith from New Albany and while fond, too fond, of whiskey, was not considered a bad man.
