Murder at (Jlayaville.On Thursday morning last a murder was committed at the house of Mr. Robert Barton, who resides near Claysville, this county. The victim was a young woman named Mary Barton, granddaughter of Robert Barton, and the murderer Elijah Barton, her uncle. Mary and a little sister lived with their grand parents. On the morning ot the murder their grandmother had occasion to he away from the house, when Mary, for some trivial cause slapped her sister. This so enraged Elijah, who was sitting in the kitchen, that he snatched a piece of fire wood from the hearth and struck Mary a violent blow on the head. The girl sank to the lloor and expired almost instantly, her skull being crushed in upon the brain. Elijah fled from the house and remained away several hours, when ho returned, proclaimin'1'bis innocence of the crime be-Ofore being accused.The murderer is supposed by some of the neighbors to be insane. Others say he is of sound mind but of very violent passion* when aroused. He has frequently threatened members of the family, when they refused to do his bidding.He was promptly arrested and after an examination before Justice Frye, wO'committed to jail.An inquest was held over the body of the girl by Coroner Jld-ham and the following Jury : Elam Heskett, James Boyd, Samuel Jack son, P. R. Shively,George Salliday. and Win. F. Clark. They rendered a verdict in accordance with the above statement. The prisoner is twenty-two years of age. The girl was sixteen.
