Cope, charged with .running off a slave woman, the property of J. C. Weatherly,,returned, after a consultation of twenty hours, a verdict of not guilty. Cope was, therefore, released from custody, and for the first time in twenty-six : months walked the streets unattended by qn officer’ He was' arrested in July, 1857, and since ..that time he has lain in jail, having been tried once when tho jury failed to agree. Before his implication in this difficulty, Cope was a prosperous grocer in the upper pan of the city, and was highly . regarded by his acquaintances. Imm^diatelv upon his arrest, his property Was attached .by Mr.; Weatherly to satisfy him * for the value of the. abducted slave,. We suppose that his entire, estate will barely pay the lawyers fees and 'thecosts attending! so .protracted a litirgation. Cope will have to take ,afresh start in the world.
