New evidence may lead to Decker killersBy L. ALLEN KLOPE Of the Telegraph‘New evidence” has led to a group of suspects in the Clarence Decker murder case, according to police.Police said the evidence maylead to a solution of the 3-year-old case.East Alton Police Chief Michael Urban said today the evidence was found July 17, buried about a half mile from Decker’s- home in the 300 block of AirlineDecker Drive, East Alton. Decker’s body was found in his home Oct. 4, 1984, just after he was stabbed to death.Urban declined the specify the nature of the evidence because police do not want to tip off the suspects in the case.“This new evidence mayclearly solve the motive for Decker’s murder,” Urban said. “Our investigation centers around a group of suspects whom we have been investigating for several months.”He said the evidence was found after an informant indicated where it was buried. Urban said the information came after the East Alton Police Department formed a mini-task force in’early June this year to investigate the Decker case. The task force is made up of two investigators from the Illinois Department of Criminal Investigation, two detectives from the East Alton Police Department . and an expert provided by the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit.Urban said the new evidence “has provided a substantial lead.” It is now being examined by the state crime lab and a forensic pathologist.“We hope to connect this evidence with other evidence found at the crime scene,” Urban said.(Continued on A-12)
