The eriine eoinmitted was one of the most brutal to occur in the county for years.Witnesses examined for the State were Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Carlton, parents of the little girl: Gertrude Carlton flic alleged victim. Howard H. Carlton, nine, her‘brother, Harold Fish, Guy H. Crosby and Sheriff. W. C. Oliver.The testimony of the above witnesses was that on the noon of the assault, Mrs. Carlton sent her daughter to the main road to mail a letter. Gertrude took idong her little brother Roland and they went down the driveway hand in hand. Ahead of them was their brother Howard. aged nine, and Coring Clark, aged 10. who were on their way blueherrying.About 100 yards from the main highway the hovs ahead met McLaughlin and he passed them with a nod. When hecame to the girl and little boy he spokeand passed on. Then it is claimed he turned around and came up to them, taking a hand of each and pulled them intothe bushes, saying he wanted to get out of the way of all automobile which was chasing him.Once off the road Gertrude testifiedMcLaughlin pulled a flask from his pocket and tried to make Ifer drink some of the liquor. She refused and he tnedPto force open her mouth, pulling a handkerchief out of his pocket and trying to prv open her mouth with this. She fought and cried out t«* her brother Howard, The man seemed to become a maniac and picking up ft club of wood out of a pile of brush nearby it is alleged struck thelittle girl over the face with it and continued to pound her with tin* club until she lost, consciousness.In the meantime. Howard and his companion. who had heard Gertrude cry out. came hack and saw the man heating the girl with the club and they ran the short distance to the house and notified Mrs. Carlton who immediately started for the scene. Howard testified the man was hack to him hut In* recognized the clothes next day in Rath when McLaughlin was araigned.When Mrs. f'arlton arrived. Gertrudewas just, coming to her senses and presented a pitiful site. Her head wasbruised from the blows, both eyes werepractically closed ami discolored, herarms were marked and swollen where she had raised them to protect her face and there were bruises on neck and body and she was bleeding profusely.The man was gone when Mrs Carlton arrived and she immediately took charge of her badly bruised daughter and sentI Howard to notify lieu* husband who is an| employe at Spinney's mills. He came home heard the wfory of tin* crime and hastened to ,Ruth and got in touch with Judge John .T. Keegan.Mr. Carlton testified to locating Me-
