Mazer found not guilty in 4 burglaries, guilty in 5BY BILL NEILTimes Staff WriterAn Adams County jury Thursday found Joseph Brian Mazer not guilty of four burglaries, but guilty of involvement in five others.,The nine break-ins were committed at businesses lastFebruary. They were part of 15such crimes dubbed the “fire extinguisher burglaries”because of the burglars' practice of spraying the devices throughout the buildings to cover upany evidence.Although the items stolen were in most cases petty cash, tools and equipment, the cleanup costs to remove the fire extinguisher dust totalled $42,000.Four other Gettysburg men have been charged in the spree. William Cartzendafner and Bradley Allen Shultz have each pleaded guilty to 15 counts of burglary and related charges, and are to be sentenced next week. They face up to 150 years in prison.Bradley Strausbaugh also pleaded guilty to two counts oftheft, and was sentenced to 24 months in an Intermediate Punishment Program.Mazer, 20, faced dozens of charges including burglary, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking, criminal conspiracy, criminal mischief and receiving stolen property.The jurors needed 3-1/2 hours to sort through the various charges and reach verdicts in each of the separate crimes.Mazer was found not guilty of all charges in burglaries at Dick Storm’s Towing, Keller’s Auto Repair, Devan’s Auto Repairand Frankenfield’s Garage.The defendant was found guilty of at least one charge in burglaries at Yingling’s Implements, Lady Taylor Body Shop, CW Performance, Dallco Industries and Pat Staub’s Chevelles.President Judge Oscar Spicer set sentencing for Dec. 30, and denied a request for bail reduction Mazer will remain at the Adams County Prison Mazer was represented byattorney Thomas Campbell, while District Attorney MichaelGeorge prosecuted the case.
