B. Wolfe, of Clinton, pronounced the following sentences: To hard labor at Anamosa for 10 years, William McDonough, John McGuan, John Sale, Harry Goody; for seven and one-half years, James McDonough. These young men are all Iowa City lads, who were arrested by Deputy Sheriff Clark and a posse of officers in August, charged with criminally assaulting Emma Gromas, a feeble-minded girl, 10 years of age. Another member of the party, Charles Fickler, alias “Chicago Pickle,’5 of Chicago, was shot dead by Clark while resisting arrest, and Luke Jordan, of Iowa City, was afterwards found dead, mysteriously free from wounds, at the side of a railroad track. Judge Wade having arrested one of the men at the revolver's point, gave way to Judge Wolfe in the trial of the case.
