They were: j gone from 121SO o’clock p. m., until ? 7, during which tUne they searchedtwo houses and got a lot of informa-( lion that may he of value later on. i The people living in the vicinity of 11 ay mil ton and Sandy Lako seem to think that a gang of desperadoes hold ova east of. the latter place, and now that the officers have the gang on the run they are willing to volunteer infer mntlon that they formerly withheld through fear that their lives would ho taken or their property destroyed. ! DetecUye Dempsey received an ntion- moos letter from Sandy Lake the other day in which this statement was actually made. Tho additional information was given that one of the men now in jail on a charge of having robhed the Hites store at Utica had long been suspected of various crimes in that section and accused him of having Lurglnriezd the Ray-milton store at Rayinllton a few years ago.| About noon on Wednesday tho sheriff got n tip from parties in the vicinity of the Smith residence, cast of Sandy Lake, ’where Tra Caldwell, charged with the* Utica robbery, made his home, to the effect that two young men had loft thcro in the morning with a number of suit cases, apparently illled with something. He got Detective Dempsey, who has been on the case, and then induced Oscar Dale to take them on a hunt for the auspicious parties. They drove toward HendcrRon, Mercer county, and there got trace of the two men. After making-ninny inquiries they learned that the two young mon wore William Ilart and Peto Smith, two friends of Caldwell. The officers also found out that they had gone to tho home or Hart at Henderson with.tho suit cases,Procuring a search warrant from a T-Ionderson 'squire for tho Ilnrt house and ulso^hat the Smith house in Sandy Laki^the officers proceeded to search .tho premises. Sure enough, thov found the live suit cases and they were all full. In one of them was a pair of now shoos, while in another were water bottles and other articles that apparently came from a drug store. The officers took the shooa, Detoctive Dempsey biqying that they wero taken from tho Hites store. The two young men were not to ho found about the place.From Hondorsou the party drove to Suudy Lake, where the house of Smith was searched. Nothing of a suspicious eharactor was found there. The officers returned home by the same route which they took in going out. They stopped at a farm'house to pay for a flue rooster which they had killed in going to Sandy Lake. They offered the farmer Jl, but he did not want to take anything, Finally a compromise of 50 .cents was agreed upon. This was one of the most oxcitlng events of the trip.
