JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Accused mass murderer Henry Lee Lucas. 47, was charged Sept. 22with the murders of eight J ackson-ville, Fla., area women betweenNov. 1979 and Dec. 1980.Lucas has already been sentenced to 75 years for the Sept. 16, 1982, murder of Mrs. Kate Rich,80, of Ringgold.He has also been indicted for eight other murders of women in Texas and is a co-defendant in a capital murder case in Louisiana in what is being described as possibly the largest string of single suspect murders in the nation’s history.While Lucas was formally charged by Duval (Fla.) County officials on Sept. 22, no formal indictments have been handed down as officials from 21 states are looking at Lucas and Ottis Elwood Toole, 36, of Jacksonville, his codefendant in Louisiana, are being described as suspects in a series of unsolved murders from 1976 to 1982.Lucas is charged in Jacksonvillewith murdering:•Regina Azell Campbell, 24,the granddaughter of Neptune Beach, Fla., Police Chief Howard Basil. Ms. Campbell’s body was found on July 12, 1980, under a car next door to Basil’s house, where she had been staying. She had been strangled.•Debra Lynn O’Quinn, 18, ofJacksonville. More than seven months after she was stabbed, her skeletal remains were found in a wooded area west of Jacksonvilleon Dec. 10, 1979.•Elizabeth Diane Knotts, 31, of Jacksonville. She was shot to death during the robbery of a motel onNov. 27, 1979.•Jamie L. Collins, 76, who wasfound beaten and stabbed to death in her apartment on Jan. 5, 1980.•Jo Cole Scheffer, 45, who was beaten and stomped to death. Her body was found in J acksonville onApr. 27, 1980.•Tammie Keel Conners, 19, of Atlantic Beach, Fla. Her nude body was found in a ravine in apark on July 20, 1980. She hadbeen strangled.•Brenda Elaine Harden, 28, of Jacksonville. Her husband foundher body on Dec. 22, 1980, lying on the floor of their home. The mother of two had been stabbed inthe chest.•And Shirley E.
