Money for lost ringout of police budgetHarry Pierson will get the money for his ring, but it will have to come from the police budget, the City Council decided Tuesday night.Pierson had filed a claim with the city for the loss of his $1,800 ring. It had been held by police as evidence after being recovered from a neighbor charged with its theft.City insurance won’t cover items lost while in the possession of the city, according to insurance adjusters.City Attorney Bill Dew recommended paying the claim, saying Pierson has threatened a lawsuit if the matter isn't taken care of.Mayor Jerry Parker said all the police officers that had access to the evidence vault have volunteered to take polygraph tests about its loss. He’s also told Chief Phil Gates to get a smaller safe to hold small items Police say the ring probably fell into other evidence that was returned or destroyed.“Those things happen,” Council Member Pete Rich saidCouncil Member Laural Sigel said the ring was lost by police, and “I think the folks who lost it ought to take part in paying for it.” Sigel suggested that the money come from the police budget. Rich made a motion, approved by all council members, to do just that.
