Police Are Taking Turtle at Hospital After Man le ShotLawrence police officers havebeen taking three-hour shifti atMemorial hospital since early last night to guard George Giles, 35- i year-old Kansas City negro whowas shot in the arm at 5:05 yesterday afternoon by Officer Ray Corn when he tried to escape while beint* taken to the police station.Giles and a companion, Willie Howell, 27, also a Kansas City negro, were stopped by Officers Com and Eddie Harris on Highway 40 just west of the Country cluband were discovered to have five cases of alleged whiskey, labled “Walker Deluxe,” in their car.Giles gave the officers considerable trouble from the start about» coming to the station, but was finally put in the police car withHarris, while Com drove Howell and his 1935 Pontiac sedan with the liquor. When the two cars pulled to the curb near the police station Giles got out and started to run north. Com stepped out of the other car and called to him to halt,then gave chase and shot Giles in . the arm iust as he was htween the Salvation Army and City garage buildings.Howell and Giles both were booked on charges of possessionand transportation of intoxicatingliquor. They told the officers they were on their way to Topeka.Giles’ conditio^ was said today to not be dangerous but his arm was badly wounded.
