His headwas beaten, apparently with a wine bottle.A little knot of London cabbies gossiped over their mid-morning | tea today about the crime.Holmes, Watson Needed.“The boys from Scotland yard are hustling around here, doing all they can to solve the murder,’’ one driver said, “but what we need is old Holmes and Watson to workon it.’’H. C. Chapman, 63, a cockney cabman whose chief claim to fame is the fact that he drove Doyle around London’s streets 30 years ago. remarked:“This is the first good murder with the Holmes touch we have ^ had in many a day,” he said. “I j can just imagine Holmes and Wat- j( son up there in their flat working I ^ on the clues they managed to keep away from the police.”Chapman pointed to the faded old brown stone Victorian house■at 221 Baker street where Holmes and Watson were supposed to have ; lived fictionally. A wine shop now occupies the street floor.He called attention to the boarded up windows on the second floorabove the shop and said, “That’s j f where Doyle placed Holmes and Watson when he started them out on their career of solving crimes.”Americans Inquire.The Holmes house is only three !1 doors down from Chiltern court, r a big block of flats where Raven , * was killed. It is just behind the j * Baker street station. Next door to the “Holmes place” is the Baker street b v- v.store whose proprietor explained that “Americans coming to Londv.!* always come here to inquire about Holmes.”Raven, a 40-year-old former ministry of war transport employe, was married but did not live with his wife.
