The defense tried to prove that the confession was forced or that Sherney was il-treated by police. The Rev. J. D. Sherney, Bap tist minister of Fairbury, ML, tes isied that when he first saw his son the toy after the crime was committed the accused husband appeared to be “terror stricken. On cross examination, Prosecutor Harry Boardman brought out that the minister did not of his own knowledge know what made the younger Shorney appear to be “terror stricken.” Other defense witnesses include: ad Mrs.sMay Markham, of Pen line; Johny Rashleigh and his wife, Fannie, of Detroit; Miss Swain, of Amy Arbor, and Robert Shorney,t wo brother, of Ypsilanti. They were all called as character witnesses, each one of then testifying that Howard and Alberta Shorney made “a very loving couple’ and were “always affectionate and happy. The Shorneys resided with Mrs. Markham in Pontiac and with the Rashleighs in Fern dale. The slam girl was a cless mate and room-mate of Miss Swain, a nurse at University Hos pital, Ann Arbor, while the two were at school theres.
