ASSAULTED AND ROBBED.wHighway Robbers Relieve a Railroader of His Money.Joi. AllMMtor Held L*p 011 South Clay ItfMC, Saturday Night—Robbed of tllt;i.Saturday eight Jos. Allerr.eier, a day switchman in the Clover Leaf yards, cams to the police station and reported that he had been robbed.He was coming down town from his home on smith Clay street at about 8 o’clock, and as he parsed the alley between the Wheel Factory sheds, at a dark and deserted spot between the Clover Leaf and P. F. railroads, three men stepped out and surrounded him.One of the highwaymen struck Alle-meier on the left side of the head with a blunt instrument as he turnedaround, while another struck at himwith an open knife. ' Joe. threw up his right hand tonroteet himself from the knife, and received a bad cut in the palm of his right hand. The blow he received on the head felled him to the earth and rendered him semi-unconscious.The robbers quickly searched hie pockets and left after securing $19 in money. Mr. Aliemeier was unable to regain hie feet for a few minutes, and before he could report the assault and robbery the fellows had made good their escape. The officers made a thorough search and did not even find a suspicious character.A large lump soon raised on the side of Mr. Allenieier’s head, the effects of the blow be received. While he was sitting in the Mayor’s office shortly after the robbery a young fellow passed the office and stepped into one of the entrances to the fire engine room, acting in a suspicious manner. Mayor Baxter went up to him and asked him what he was doing. H* said he was waiting for two fellows. The Mayor invited him into the office, telling him that he wished to see him.The fellow hesitated when he saw Aliemeier in the room, and said he had no business in the office and guessed he wouldn't go in. When he saw Mr. Aliemeier he turned pale. This looked very suspicious and the Mayor grabbed at him. The fellow was too quick, however, and darted down Second street, doubling on his tracks, and was last seen crossing the Clover Leaf canal bridge, and escaped his pursuers.The fleet footed fellow was John Hoelzel, and-he was about town, yesterday very indignant that he w*s suspected of having a hand in the hold-up.
