K.thelastThe Crawfordsyille Journal thus alludes to the return of Will II. Thompson, whose arrest was briefly noticed in the Patriot last week:Some months ago VV. H. Thompson, who removed from Crawfordsvilie to Lebanon, collected $1,200 for clients residing near that place, lie used the money, which he believed he would be able to replace, and unfortunately lost the entire amount. Being unwilling to inform liis family what ho had done, and beleiviHg that, could he establish himself elsewhere, he would, in time be able to refund the money he had lost, ho left home without informing anyoneof his departure or his destination. He _ went from Lebanon to California, and j \yAl wandered from place to place, being (nKau the ton.I herweningagretheBariDauthrothouaudirede“Thsitming’sas tunable to find a location. With a troubled conscience and a longing for the family and the home which he had been forced to leave, he could find neither peace of mind nor a place where be could atone for his faults and re-establish himself in business. During hisabsence he was all the time in communication with his brother, Maurice Thompson, and his father-in-law, John Lee, io whom his heartbroken wife with her children have been staying since her husband's absence. Shortly after he reached California he wrote to his brother Maurice and Mr. Lee, confessing unreservedly what he had done, ot | giving them the amount of Ids property t’ch : .md asking that the debt which had exiled him from his family, making him a homeless wanderer, bo paid. This was done, accordingly, some time since. The letters he wrote home avowing his penitence and remorse would have moved a heart of stone, and the sorrow of his wife during his absence was such that at times her family feared she would lose her reason. * * * Knowing at the time the painful affairs was made public that a redeital of the supposed facts could only wound the feelings of his family the Journal made no allusion toit. It only docs so now that it may correct erroneous impressions that have been made. Of the fault, gambling, which is responsible for all that followed it is not the Journal’s province to speak. It has destroyed in mind, body and soul some of the most brilliant and accomplished men, stripping them of all their most valued possessions, destroying their homes, and alienating them from family and from friends, its tragedies have been matched only by those for which whisky is responsible. The losses it has caused have been as great, and its inlluence is as ditlicult to understand. Jn Mr. Thompson's case it is believed that he is truly repentant and will proye his penitence by a complete reformation. There have been few men connected with the Crawfordsville bar to whom the future seemed more full of promise. Socially,he is a most genial and companionable man. lie lias hosts of friends and few enemies: even those who condemn him are equally ready to forgive and help him regain the ground he has lost, and retrieve the past. Intellectually, he is fully the equal of his brother Maurice, writing both prose and poetry of a high degree of merit. Between thetwo brothers there lias always existed a«•most beautiful sympathy and companionship. As boys they were associated together in their studies and sports;they pursued the study of law and entered into practice together, and were even more closely united later in life, having married sisters.hisloseelu-pretShefaidtheday,ly hpavjthewillpan' ‘Sp star and to aVV.lawfull, witian (violPia)ing.mult;shethecessThewellpreiBerMJobthe“ Alt; Tuebeslsuncasiliilewas le.u Bat favlt; eve pell icle poii eha not it ierathepie II aSI a: 15ei thear* 11(St.filltoinon i vil
