Gazette. THREE OF THE MURDERERS CON*VJCTED.We are indebted to a friend at Rock Island for the following letter, giving information of the conviction of three of dol. Davenport’e murderers xRock Island, Saturday )Dc noin :herotl- his rae themorning, Oct. 1 Ith, 1846Friend Thomas s—I have only time to eay that the jury returned a verdict of guilty last evening, against John Long, Aaron Long, and Granville Young. Young on tint round of being an accessory before the act. Jas. Knox, Esq., closed his argument on the part of the people, about uine o’clock, and the jury were out about two hours. Birch testified to the whole transaction.Birch and Baxter will be arraigned this morning, and if they apply for a change of venue, they will probably be taken to Carroll county n«at week for trial; if not, the Judge will hold a special term a week from Monday next. Birch and Baxter ore sure to be convicted, for, although Birch, in his testimony, has ingeniously left himself out, still, the evidence Is full against him. Baxter is to be defended by J, B. Wells, but his confessions are enough to convict him.Yours, in haste, B.A gentleman who was present at Rock Island during the trial, has gives us some particulars of Birch’s confession not contained in our correspondent’s letter. It seems that he not only disclosed all the particulars of the murder and robbery of Col. Davenport, but gave the names of several rogues engaged in other acts of villany. The Red-rnins, (or Reilinfd whose capture we an-1nouneea last vv£ok, he flkys, kept » house which was used as a general renduavous for the fraternity of rascals in their visits to that part of the country. It was at this house,(on Devil Creek, Lee co., Iowa,) that the plan was devised and concocted of murdering Col. D., and the father of the family, (there are three of them—the father a»d two sons) was present and assisted in the ar- \ rangeinents for the bloody deed. He lias been indicted by the Grand Jury of Rock Island, as an accessory before the foet* A son of this old man (William) assisted at the robbery of Knox and Drury’s office, in Rock Island j about the time of Davenport’s murder, for which an indictment was also found against him. Jack, another brother, was the murderer of young Hodges, in Nauvoo. The latter is still at large, but it is to be hoped that justice will yet overtake him.— Two other indictments have been found by the grand jury, but our informant did not learn the names of the parties, nor the offences of which they were charged.CLeohSameGeorf,SfcepliJohnRttlp!Benja I.
