LONDON.OI-D BAILEY SESSIONS.* IVtilt am Sheppard was capitally indicted for felo-imAtsly forging and counterfeiting, and uttering a5 true, a certain receipt, with intent to defraud Ri* §h{trJ ATorJj/.•The Prosecutor, Richard Af,rdy% had been servant to a Gentleman, and having by economy saved some money, he was desirous of vesting it in the public funds; He therefore commissioned hia brother, Thomas Adordy, to take 201, to the Bank of England, and have it vested in the Five per?Cents.arylast to the Bank, and meeting the prisoner, of.' whom lie had previoudy some slight knowledge/ and who was what is called a jobbing broker, he explained to him the nature ot his business, and , the piisoner off* red to transact it. To this Thomas* Sdordij agreed, and gave him the 20l. for the purpose, and shortly afterwards the prisoner returned, and brought with him a receipt, purporting to be the receipt of IV. S. lVcst% for a transaction of 501. to the name of MorJy. In July following, Richard A ford if applied to the Bank to receive the half yearly dividend due on the sol. but on exhibiting his receipt, he found that no such stock hadbeen transferred to his- account, nor was any such person as Wat employed in the Stock OlTice.TJ.Guilty of thefrauds but not of forgtrij. The Learned Judgec|pii felt it necessary to explain to the Jury, and that in the present case the forgery Was the very essence of the crime charged.
