CENSURED THE SEXTOX.i^’ity Cemetery Committee MetFriday to Investigate an tothe Burying of NoraHarris. The cemetery committee of thecity council, which is composed ofMayor Holley, Aldermen Montgomery, Schafer and Wood, met Friday«k-night in the city council chamber toinvestigate concerning the burial ofNora Harris in Jacksonville com*tery without a permit. Jacob Wint- I ^lor, sexton of the cemetery, wascalled apon for an explanation, andstated that a man named Thompsonhad come to him and said hewanted a grave dug in the Thomp son lot. This was done and the body arrived at the cemetery about 10 o'clock one Sunday morning. When asked for a physician’s certificate the persons who came with the body promised to send one within a few days. Mr. Wiutler said the certificate reached him five daysafter the burial, but that lie failed to report the matter to the health warden until the time of the coroner's inquest. Consequently the health warden knew nothing at all about the affair untilthe inquest was held. The commit* tee censured Mr. Wintler for his negligence, but took no action. Section 1 of Article (5 of the citystatutes relating the cemetery department, reads: “No sexton shallreceive any corpse for interment until he shall have been furnishedwith a certificate from some practicing physician or the coroner ofthe countv. stating the nature of the disease or injury which hascaused the death of the deceased.” Section 7 of Article of the city statutes relating to the health department, is as follows: “The sextons of Jacksonville and Diamond drove cemeteries shall see that nograve is dug in their respectivecemeteries unless they first have a permit from the health warden.”vVrrir.\MMI)cl*1c4 1.
