Coburn s place.A New Item of Taxation,From the Danville Union. At the late Circuit Court a trial was had upon an indictment against Alva Gossett for the murder of Mary J. Gossett. The attorneys suggested to his Honor, Judge Turman, the propriety of having a shorthand reporter to take the testimony. The Judge did not like to take the responsibility of putting such an expense upon the county, but being assured that one could be obtained for $10 per day, he consented. Now for the outcome. At the close of the trial a bill was presented to the Court for nearly $1,000, and it was allowed. It is true by the aet of the last session of the General Assembly, page 195, that, at the suggestion of either party to a suit, the Court may appoint a short hand reporter whose report may be taken as evidence in the case. This is the first time that a reporter has been employed in this county, to accommodate the bar, and I presume it will be the last. The taxpayers will think those slips of paper a poor compensation for their money, when they come to grind out their taxes. E. L. S.
