By DON HAVENS and BILL NANGLE Times Staff Writers TIPTON -- Confused silence surrounds the first anniversary of the death of Olene Emberton, with Sheriff Verl Grimme the only police official still active ly investigating the mysterious death of the then 17-year-old girl. A meticulous investigation has been carried out by state and local officials since the discovery of the girl’s nude ‘Someone’s not telling all he knows,’ sheriff claims body in ditch north of here a year ago next Tuesday. Even the study and research of the case by professional pri vate detectives failed to re veal any additional evidence, Indiana State Police claim they are now investigating the case on a limited basis. Plaguing the investigators work has been the pathologist’s ruling, ‘‘Cause of death unknown,’? Study by qualified medical examiners and review of their findings by still other medical officials can reveal no logical explanation for how the teenager met her death. Rumors upon rumors have heaped into an insurmountable obstacle, hindering proper in vestigation of the case. Grimme reports that not a week has gone by during which ‘‘tips haven’t been checked and found to be sheer rumor.”’ The sheriff, leading the in vestigation, has checked and rechecked clues in the death. He has compiled over 24 hours of interviews on tape record ing. More than 250 pages in reports are on file at his of fice here, and has personally interviewed an approximate 700 persons in connection with the case. State Police, private investi gators and other interested law officials have questioned scores of people in connection with the death. The scene of the mishap has been ‘‘gone over with a fine tooth comb,’’ but no new clues have been materialized. Objects found near the body have been examined, and in vestigators are still seeking to learn the whereabouts of keys to the girl’s auto and of her clutch purse. The question foremost in the minds of those still investi gating the incident is: “Who was with the girl at the time of her death??? Authorities are convinced that someone has not revealed all information relating to the case, Grimme states: ‘Someone is not telling everything they know.”’ He feels that such information will be brought in to the open, in time. ‘*We have had to find out most of our information the hard way,’’ the sheriff states. He relates information sought from a person already questioned will often be revealed by another source at a later date. He told the Times: ‘‘People have been afraid to talk and get involved. This has often made it very difficult.” Checking and rechecking has been the key to gaining what information of ficials have regarding the case. Other law officers, including F.B.I. agents, have reviewed the work done by Grimme on the case. They relate that a thorough investigation was con ducted by combined police offi cials.
