A Dastardly Outrage. Two Villains Attempted to Hang aKospcotable Citizen ofihe DarltCor-ner, of Cilfty Township. On last Thursday morning Mr. James Elliott, aged about seventy years, who resides in what|ls Jcalled the Dark Corner of Clifty township, went out to his barn a short time before daylight to feed his stork. He had fed the horses and went into the wagon shed for some purpose when he was caught by two men who told him that his time had come that they intended to hang him.* He was told to say what he had to say at once, and that he might “write something to his family if he wished to. He did this and was taken by the fellows and put in the wagon and a rope which had been previously arranged over a rail above the wagon was put around his neck. He says one of the men then started out of the barnyard, and the other pushed him off. His weight broke the ra 1 in two and he fell to the floor where he was found unconscious by his son, George Elliott, about daybreak. He was taken to the house, but did not regain consciousness until yesterday morning, when he related the circumstances as givenabove. Ho states further that themen told him that they intended to make way with Dr. Biddinger, Elijah Jackson Jr., Key. Albert Carter and others. There are rumors of different kinds as to the cause for hanging the old man, but none of them seem reasonable. Some persons think also that Mr. Elliott attempted suicide, but his neighbors have noticed nothing of late that would lead him to attempt to take his own life. One of the men who made an examination of the barn yesterday, says that he found a bed in the hay that looked like it had been occupied the night before. There is great diversity of opinion in regard to this singular case. Further developments may clear up the mystery, but at this time the peoplo in that section are greatly alarmed and excited.
