Suspect: Shooting Was an Accident(Continued from Page B-l) last words. He died of the two gunshot wounds. Doddy, 32, of 105 Bristol Place, was charged Thursday with two counts of second-degree murder.Doddy pleaded innocent at his arraignment Friday before City Judge Thomas Higgins, who ordered him held in jail without bail. Doddy’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 19.Doddy told police he brought the loaded shotgun, which he bought in 1982 for $80, to the university maintenance building at 611 University Ave. about 6am last Saturday He wanted to sell the gun so he could pay his $150 rent, he said.Hey, what are you doing here, Kevin?” Hughes asked, according to Doddy’s statement. Doddy then pulled out the shotgun, saying he wanted to sell it and that it was loaded, the statement said.Hughes, a former police officer, warned Doddy about the gun, Doddy said.“He said to be careful with it and I said that I was going to take out the shells,” Doddy said in a three-page sworn statement “Iwas fiddling with the gun and 1 must have had my finger on the trigger and it went off. The next thing I saw was Kenny had blood all over his chest and he fell facedown on the floor.. ”Doddy then walked over to Hughes to see if he was ail right, Doddy told police. Doddy picked up the shell that was discharged from the shotgun, and was putting the shell in a pocket of his jacket when he accidentally fired the second shot, Doddy told police.Doddy told police he didn’t want to get caught with the gun or the shells, so he cut them up. He dumped the cut-up shotgun into Onondaga Creek, and the shells into grates along the side of Salt Springs Road.Alter the shooting, Doddy thought about killing himself, his statement said.Doddy’s lawyer, Kate Rosenthal, said after his arraignment that he has no prior criminal record and has lived in Syracuse all his life. He has worked at SU for about eight years.Doddy is accused of both intentional murder and murdering Hughes by acting with depraved indifference to human life.
