City man arrestedCUMBERLAND - An Elm Street man was arrested Saturday by Cumberland Police on various charges, including assault with intent to murder.Gerald R. Andrews, 41, was arrested at about 4:30 p.m. at a neighbor’s residence on Elm Street, police said.Andrews was charged with assault with intent to murder, four counts of assault and one count of battery. He was to be given a bond hearing Saturday evening.The arrest was made after Patrolman David Broadwater reportedly observed Andrews driving recklessly and attempting to ram and force a vehicle off the roadway of South Centre Street.The incident allegedly occurred at about 2 p.m. as off-duty Officer Broadwater was en route to police headquarters for duty. Officer Broadwater obtained the license plate number of the vehicle when the incident took place.Two-and-a-half hours later, officers on patrol observed the vehicle on Elm Street and the arrest was made within minutes and without incident.Police said the vehicle which Andrews allegedly tried to run off the road was occupied by his ex-wife, the couple’s son and a man. Andrews reportedly had his seven-month-old child in his vehicle at the time.
