Boy, 16, critical after Hot Springs crashBy KAREN AHOStaff WriterA 16-year-old Two Rivers boy was in critical condition Tuesday following a late-night car accident on Chena Hot Springs Road.Benjamin Fenwick remained unconscious in the intensive care unit at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital with severe head injuries 17 hours after the midnight accident, said his father, Jim Fenwick.Fenwick and friend John Kelley Jr., 18, were riding in the back seat of a car driven by Two Rivers resident Ronald Fox when the car went into a ditch at 18.6 Mile and rolled, Alaska State Troopers reported.Fox, 46, his wife Cristine, 34, and Kelley suffered minor injuries and were released Tuesday from Fairbanks Memorial.A preliminary investigation by troopers indicated Fox had been speeding and showing his passengers how well his new 1995 Eagle Talon handled when the car went off the road. Kelly, however, who has a sketchy recollection of events surrounding the accident, said he does not remember Fox showing the car off or driving particularly fastFox, a safety driving traineron Fort Wainwright, talked often of how well the Talon handled the road, said Kelley and Jim Fenwick. Fox was so proud that he had a personalized license plate made to match that idea: “LECLAW,” as in the claws of an eagle’s talons.After the accident, Fox told Fenwick he suspected mechanical failure. “Ron said it swung over and went on him,” Fenwick said. “He said it was like he was just along for the ride.”Fox and his wife were giving Benjamin Fenwick and Kelley aride home to the 23 Mile area after the boys had helped them put trusses on a garage at the Fox’s home off 17 Mile, Jim Fenwick said.Fox registered a .085 percent blood alcohol level on a portable breath test troopers administered on the scene. That is within the .10 legal limit for driving.In 1993, Fox’s wife at the time, Nancy, was killed by a drunken driver on the Parks Highway as the two returned from a vintage car show in Anchorage.
