Va., Oct 9.—As the n j the result of a practical joke played on his wife, MajoivCfaarles Smith,’colored, is dying and Mre.; Smith is in the hospital room of the county jaii, while Elbert Medley is in hiding somewhere in the hills,Mrs. Smith ia intensely jealous, and this has been the cause of Smith teasing her. Last night he had EJbert Medley, a neighbor, dress up as a woman, come to his front gate after dark and call him up. Medley followed directions and in plain view of Mrs. Smith, who was watching from an upstairs window, made love Vo her husband.This enraged Mrs. Smith, and, procuring a big pistol, she followed her husband and his supposed woman companion up the road. Watching her opportunity Bhe called - to Smith; and as ho turned she fired,: the bullet striking him; in the stomach and ranging* upward through, the lung, producing a mortal wound.The woman then turned the gun upon herself in an attempt to commit suicide.but the bullet only struck in the leg, severing the big artery. She almost bled to death before a physician cuultireach her. She lies in jail awaiting the result of her injuries.t
