Purvey of San Pablo Avenue Underpass Project OrderedAlbany’s city council took action on the much discussed pedestrian underpass at San Pablo and Solano Avenuos last night, by ordering Harry I. Dygort, city engineer, to make an immediate survey on such a plan and determine its feasibility.Mayor O. C. Yenne suggested that the survey also include the oon-siderntion of an overhead pass, which would cost less than an underpass. This discussion was prompted by the arrest of Charles Valterza and the ordered closing of a market owned by Tony Lombardo at 545 San Pablo venue.Stating that the council had discharged its duties in this field, Yenne declared that it was felt that no further action was necessary, This statement was in answer to a communication submitted to the council by Police Chief L. G. Jester, which included a report on his actions in this field and a recommendation that the ordinance be changed to solve the problem.Valterza was arrested last week on the charge of killing live fowl In his market, which is prohibited by the ordinance. Lombardo was ordered to clean up his business and stop killing and keeping live fowl within city limits.Proceedings to change the name of Garfield Avenue east of Key Route Boulevard to Thousand Oaks Boulevard were ordered by the council. This action was taken to eliminate the ,confusion arising when motorists p«ass the Berkeley-Albany city limits and find the street name changed.Norman Riggs, formerly employed by the PWA at the Albany Recreation Center, will not be reinstated to his former position, it was reported to the council. This reply was sent to the city by the - PWA in answer to the council’s resolution requesting that Riggs be re-employed in the city of Albany. Riggs was dismissed from employment in the recent government cuts of relief workers.
