H. McHenry of the criminal division of the district court, sentenced Glen McGill, self confessed thief, to the Anamosa reformatory for ten years because, as he expressed it, “to send a man to the county jail for a year is too cruel for any use.” McGill had .pleaded guilty to stealing a coat.‘‘Ordinarily I would punish you by Imposing a sentence of tw-elve months in the county jail, but under present conditions that would be too inhuman for me to do,” said Judge McHenry.‘‘Looking at it from a humanitarian standpoint, I am going to send you to the reformatory at Anamosa for ten years, as the law does not permit to give you a shorter prison sentence. But at the end of the first year I will petition the board of parole to release you.”May Not Get Government Highway.
