Man Wanted on Charge Here Again Gets AwayClarence J. Birger. a former emolove of the Geo. A. Hor-mel Co. by vhem he has been accused of embezzling$750 recently eluded the law again.Picked up in Los Angeles on a drunk charge, Birger gavethe name Clarence J. Foyer. lx)s Angeles Police routine 1 y took his linger prints and sent them to FBI headquarters in Washington. D C. When check-ft |ed there, it was learned that they matched the prints of Birger.The FBI immediately sent atelegram to the Mower County Sheriff who five minutes later called Uis Angeles, but Birger had bailed out and could not be found. This occurred, Sept.15.A $40,000 shortage appeared at Hormel Co.. April 18, 1945, and under interrogation, June 23, Birger admitted taking some money, but according to a former fellow' employe, “his storywas so fouled up, nothing couldbo made of it.”During the interrogation,which occurred at Northwood. Iowa, Birger looked at the time, saw' it w'as near noon and asked permission to go “out to lunch.” after which he thought his memory would clear up. He hadn't been seen since, until the drunk charge in Los Angeles.Birger was reported to have made out profit and loss reports on sales routes and alsoacted as a purchaser, w h i 1 eemployed here.A warrant for grand larceny, in the amount of $750 was issued against Birger June 25. 1945during the ter m of former Sheriff Arnold Eckharh Bonding companies are believed to have been stuck for the shortage in funds.Wallace Sieh, Mower Countyattorney, said, concerning the nearly 20 . year . old warrant. “Criminal prosecution outlaws in three years, unless it can be established that the accused has been out of the state. That time is not counted.”The question is, when did he leave the state?, or more important, where is he now?Former Sheriff A1 Reinartz told the Herald that during a routine civil defense finger print check in the 1940's, the FBI reported that Birger’s print s were identical to those of a man called “Clarence Foyer” who had served a hitch in the Navy in the late 1920's.AT STOUT INSTITUTEDiane Bloomfield, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Bloomfield, 705 7th St. NW; Richard B.
