At police headquarters the man was booked on th«* charge of Illegally keeping liquor and will come before District court this morning on that charge.Sergt. Michael H. Winn, Officers John J. Leahey and W illiam F. Liston of the local liquor squad, acting on a tip, started In to search the Beading and Billerica roads into Lowell. Sergt. Winn kept a surveillance of the Heading road and Officers Liston and Leahy of the Billerica road. Owing to the coming up of an Important case in District court. Sergt. Winn had to leave his post on the Reading road at 10 o'clock, tfcjwovir. the other two officers kept their watch and about 11 o'clock in the morning their patience was rewarded. Near the Carlisle road on Gorham street the truck answering the description of the one looked for hove in sight and the two officers immediately began to follow it. The driver speeded up tho truck and the officers did likewise. Penegoulakis leading the officers through the Chelmsford and then through the Billerica woods. Officers Llstoh and Leahy in an endeavor to bring the man to a stop brought their guns into play and fired several shots. The man paid no attention to the firing but continued speeding along. When he made Gorham afreet' a^ain the officers caught up with him. Applying extra speed the truck started ahead. Officer Liston realizing that Penegoulakis was Intending to outdistance them leaned out of the police car and fired a shot fnto the rear left tire. This caused the truck to rock from the flatennlng of the tire and the man fearing that tbe machine would overturn brought It to a stop.I'pon investigating the truck, which was a closed affair, the officers found cases of straight alcohol, the bottles of which were packed in wooden cases. The entire interior was filled with the wooden boxes.Officer Liston then came with Penegoulakis to the station on the tru* k and at police headquarter* he was placed under arrest and booked
