'nitlon more than satisfied /the women that Mrs. Baird was all right. To the ladies she represented that she was a delegate to the W. C.‘T. U. at buffalo, N.Y. She was stopping at the G house, and . would leave for Buffalo ‘ at once, only a check she was looking for atevery moment from her husband had not arrived. As she was out of funds, would the women he so kind as to make her an advance? All she asked was $175. The women, after becoming enraptured vrith her bland appearance, of course gave their check for the amount. Mrs. Baird re-” grettcd to leave so soon, but she would make it her business to call before she started for Buffalo and reimburse the ladies. Mrs. Baird failed to keep hv ■promise. As stated, I finally ran her in and that ended, for a time at least, the crtminal work of a smooth fe%iale swindler. ' -Another criminal of the female persuasion was Madam H-:—, she being one of the slickest shoplifters that lever ran across for some time, and the game she worked was most clever. One day she entered a jeweler’s shop and asb'ed to be shown some pins. While she was examiug them a man began play tog a hand organ before the door. The music seemed to annoy the Judy, and, stepping to the door, she threw a piece of money to the man and told him to go away, which he did. On return-• ing to the counter she said that none of the pins suited her, bub that* as some compensation for bis trouble, she would buy a brooch. She choose oue, paid for it* and was leaving the shop when the jeweler missed a diamond pin of great value _ from among those she had been* examining.j-' The jeweler stopped his customer,. who seebaed highly indignant, and insisted on the jeweler's wife searching her, which was done, but no pin was found. I was passing by at the time, and determined to watch the woman. 1 saw her' enter another jeweler shop, where she was pretending to make a . purchase, when the organ grinder made his appearance. As soop as he began ■replaying she again threw him some money and ordered him to move on, but I* Iquaiutances was profuse in her expressions of admiration for the work. Every time she called the subject of the book was brought up. In fact, the visitor' Bpoke so frequently aud extravagantly that the hostess took an antipathy to her.One day this.lady called, and the lady of the house was delayed a little in going to the parlor. When she did enter the visitor talked more volubly than usual and on every subject but the book. She made herself very entertaining, so much so that the hostess never thought of the book. The same eveuing it was discovered that the book was missing.Another lady, who had traveled extensively* in Europe, on one occasion brought home a fan of rare workmanship. It was most exquisitely beautiful ; in fact; it was so lovely that she kept it on her cabinet in the drawingroom. The cabinet was tilled with all%sorts of rare aud queer foreign trophies, and it was one of the subjects with which she eutertaincd her visitors.: She was a charming talker, and a word or two here and an interesing incident or anecdote there relative to the articles, made a visit to her pleasant and profitable. — \ ‘One morning the room was dusted as usual; everything was intact. That afternoon there were five or six callers. The subject of European travel came up with the last caller, and, the hostess turned to her cabinet. The fan was gone! and has never been found. Whoever took‘.She fan has kept it secreted, for all kinds of ruses have been tried to find it and all have failed.Nellie McGooch is another criminal of the female persuasiou whom I finally ran down with the assistance of Detective Balfour. \ She was one of the most dangerous diamond' thieves and pickpockets extaut, and a member of the notorious Drake gang of safe blowers and diamond “lifters.” She sailed 'under• I • • •Beveral aliases, among .which were Flora Dell und Anna Hall.Detective Balfour and I firsf’spotted-' her on Biroadway (New York city), and followed her for.an hour or so. She finally entered the K house, Where «beWit and Humor.Irascible old man (to his neighbor)— If you don't quiet that dog's bark . at night—” “Well,” interrupted the neighbor, in a defiant manner, “what if I don't quiet his bark at night?” Irascible Old Man—“Then I’ll—I’ll just disembark him ; that’s all!”When Major Noggin’s sweetheart said to him that “the rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” be seemed puzzled for a moment, but soon recovered, and, with a knowing smile, responded: “P’r’aps ’twould; but rye by any other name wouldu’t smell aswheat.”leaTh11.MThtW'□0153:rec11shidnprItththsi:dcyeClinwPift!“How came these holes in your elbows?” said a widowed mother to her only son. “Oh, mother, I hid behind the sofa when Colonel Qobler wns sayin' 10f to our Maria that he’d take her, even if you had to be thrown in ; and he didn’t know I was there, and so I held in and laughed in my sleeves till I bust ’em.”Three medical celebrities meet together to'conBult at the sick-bed of Gen. V •’ 'Doctor,” exclaimed a wag to awell known physician, “how long will it take hanging tos-produce death ?” • “Twenty, or at most thirty minutes,” replied the doctor, pausing ; “but why do you ask t” “Oh 1 because last night'I saw a man hanging for two mortal hours, and he isn’t deud yet.” “You did !” exclaimed the doctor, emphatically. I haven't heard a word of this yet. Where did the man -hang?” “He was hanging arouud a saloon up town,” replied themet Audy Drake, a diamond; bespangledwag. The doctor gave t utterance to something that sounded very mudh like a vehement expression, and passed on.Hotter (iray'B Sweet Powders (or ChUdjrtn.i1
