Attempts to Kill Director BrandoniSPRINGFIELD, ILL., Oct. 6(UP)—State Welfare Director Rodney H. Brandon said today that anyaction against Mrs. Leona Nielsen,mother of four, who allegedly tried to shoot him at Chicago yesterday,was up to State Alienist Harry R. Hoffman.He said he had signed a Chicago police compaint against Mrs. Niel* sen after consulting with Hoffman, and that he would follow whatever action the alienist recommended.He said Hoffman advised Mrs. Nielsen’s conditon is such that she needs treatment.The welfare head said that he had no connection with the incidents which prompted the attempt on his life.The woman, Mrs. Leona Nielsen. 37, a large brunette and mother of four children, became angry over alleged rebuffs at the hands of Rodney H. Brandon, head of the department, and burst into his office, demanding a “fair interview.” “You haven’t done right by me,” she said.I Brandon tried to calm her, but while he was talking she drew a .25 caliber pistol from her handbag and pointed it at him.“No man is going to use my misery as a shield,” she said, pullingthe trigger twice.Roth times a defective firiug pin failed to discharge thj bullet.
