Gabriel Moffatt.Four or five years ago a stranger came to George Werner’s butcher shop, this city, saying he had just bought Henry Peoples farm up near Lambert’s switch, including the stock, and that he desired to sell some of the fat bogs among his purchase. A deal was made and Mr. Werner gave the stranger, who gave his name as Gabriel Moffatt, a check for 820, as an advancement on the trade. Moffatt was to drive the hogs in next da}r. The stranger then went around to the Douner Milling Company and attempted to sell Frank Everroad some wheat and tried to get an advance payment pending delivery, at the same time telling of the trade he had made with Mr. Werner. Suspicion was soon attracted to the strauger and before he left this city, and before he had cashed Mr. Werner's check he was arrested and jailed. As Mr. Werner was out nothing the matter was dropped and Moffatt was released.Two weeks later Moffatt went to a large flouring mill in Mt. Vernon, Posey county, with a sample of wheat he proposed to sell them. The deal was made for 2000 bushels, to be hauled iu and delivered at once, and an advance payment of $200 made Moffatt. For this crime he was arrested and sent to the state prison.Saturday last a stranger came to John Milligan, a Clark county stock dealer just as he was weighiug and receiving a large lot of stock he had bought of a farmer, and proposed to sell him twenty bead of fine fat hogs.
