Nick Mackie of the King County Police Department said earlier Bundy, who has lived in Tacoma, Seattle and Olympia, had not been considered an active suspect in the 1974 series of Ted” slayings in the Pacific Northwest although he was among the 2,800 persons on file in the caseHowever, Lawrence G. Waldt, county public safety director, said Friday Bundy’s arrest in Utah had stimulated new interest in his activities.Bundy was being held in Salt Lake on $100,000 bail on charges he attacked 17-year-old Carol DaRonch at a Salt Lake shopping mall Nov. 8, 1974. Miss DaRonch and witnesses to the incident picked Bundy from a police line-up.The mall incident involved a man pretending to be a policeman who put handcuffs on Miss DaRonch and drove off with her. Although the handcuffs used were of an unusual type, a key fitting them was found at the site of the apparent abduction of Debra Kent, 17. No trace of Miss Kent has been found.Salt Lake police said last year they believed her disappearance may have been connected to the dissappearances of two other Salt Lake area women, Melissa Smith and Laura Aime, both 17. The two young women were found dead shortly after their disappearances.Bundy was graduated from the University of Washington in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He worked in the 1972 re-election campaign of Gov. Dan Evans and later worked for the Washington State Republican Central Committee.In 1973, he entered law school at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
