Alfred Lee Wood win dying in a base hospital in KYanee on September 15th of lobar pneumonia This sad information was conveyed in an official message from the war department in the following telegram addressed to his mother. Mrs. Mary M Ro$pr, of 70S Wost Seventh street. Sterling“Deeply regret to inform von that it is officially reported that Wagoner Alfred Lee Goodwin, field artillery, died of lobar pneumonia September 15. Signed, Harris, acting adjutant general.’*Was Only 23 Year* Old.The deceased was born September -8, 1895, at Dewitt, la., and was therefore only twenty-three years of age at the time of his death. He came to Illinois twelve years ago with his mother and two brothers, and bad made his home in Sterling since then.He enlisted June 2. 1917, in old Co.£. Sixth regiment, and two days later Joined the local soldiers at Rock Island where they were doing guard duty at the arsenal. He accompanied them from Rock Island to Springfield and then to Gamp Logan, Houston. Texas,, where the hoys were transferred to the 123rd heavy field artillery. Shortly before leaving Texas for FYance last May he -was transferred from Battery B, which was comprised of the old Company E boys, and placed in the supply, company of the I23rd heavy field artillery. It was this company, commanded by Capt. Cull ins. which lost half of its men and the other half were sent to the hospital as the result of gas attacks, as mentioned eltwhere in today’s Gazette.AH Right September 8.Capt. Culllns* letter was dated Sept. '8th. A card and letter bearing the same date were received from Alfred stating that he was well at that time.The dead soldier is_ survived by themother, Mrs. Mary M 'Royer. and stepfather, William Royer, and two brothers, Edward Goodwin, of 611 Avenue I. and Charles O. Goodwin, of the 126th field artillery band, of Iowa which recently departed for overseas.
