Mrs! Schaefer, executive secretary of. the Kern County Branch of the American Cancer Society, was asked by the California State Department of Public' Health’s Bureau of Food and Drug Inspection to volunteer as a Lee “patient/’ Lee, according to bureau, officials, had been preying on Bakersfield residents terrified of the threat of cancer and mulcting thousands monthly from his unsuspecting, but gullible customers.....She said she first went to -lt;Dr,” Lee’s office, winch was a squalid residence in one of Bakersfield’s' seamier districts, in the company of a companion, Mrs. Vernice Jensen, executive director of the Kern County Heart Association. ‘DIAGNOSIS’ DESCRIBEDOnce in Lee’s office, Mrs. Schaefer ‘ was told to remove her shoes. Then followed the first “treatment” for cancer. “Dr. Lee assured her by only a glance she had cancer.First off, she said, the doctor” squeezed her foot sharply. When she said “ouctf and told him it hurt, be .replied: .rOi ccLirse it hurls. It means ydu have kidney trouble.”The second squeeze brought the diagnosis that Mrs. Schaefer suffered from liver trouble. The next squeeze indicated that female trouble, too, was plaguing the .poor housewife.‘TREATMENT’ GIVEN‘Dr.” Lee suggested immediate treatment on the ozone machine, a table radio-like apparatus housed in a bedroom.Mrs. Schaefer was required to lie on the bed and was cov-- As it turned out in the pros-1 ecu Hon of “Dr.” Lee, Mrs. Schaefer didn't need to buy the uicotie machine to trap him. Last July 12, he drew a 360-day sentence in the Kern County jail.This morning, along with Mrs. McKee, Mrs. Schaefer was given a medal by the American Cancer Society, the California Division of the ACS and the Cancer Division of the California Medical Association.VOLUNTEER SCARREDMrs. McKee’s, story paralleled that of Mrs. Schaefer’s. Except that Mrs. McKee retains, a large, red shoulder scar from the “treatment for the cancerous/’ but really harmless, mole on the shoulder area.Mrs. McKee’s target was a “Dr. Pearls Savely of Le-moore, who last Feb. 19 received a Tulare County jail sentence for also violating the medical practices act and the pure drugs act.The only difference between the two “medical men was that Savely kept his home clean. But, despite the lack of any scientific test on the mole, Savely sold her his “killing” ointment and his curing” ointment.
